Language focus
We want to grow some tomatoes. What does our plant need?
It needs a lot of/a little water.
What will happen? It will grow slowly/quickly.
Will this plant grow? Yes, it will. /No, it won’t. It needs light.

The first period
A. The children are in a science lesson. Look, listen and say.
Presentation
1. Use picture cards to teach: a little water, a lot of water, a little light, a lot of light, a large pot, a small pot, grow slowly, grow quickly, die.
Compare: a little, a few
a lot of, many, much
2. Summarise how to grow plants by using sentences with need, e.g. Seeds need water and light.
3. Show Transparency. Play the cassette and point to the speech bubbles. Ask the pupils to repeat after the cassette.
Practice
1. Show Transparency. Tell the pupils, the science teacher, Miss Li, is going to plant some tomatoes. Ask them What does she need?
2. Read the conversation between the teacher and the children. Ask the pupils to repeat the conversation after me. Explain: a pot of soil
Add: a bottle/basket/bowl/cup/glass of
3. Divide the class into four groups. Tell two groups to work out the conversation between the teacher and the children in picture 2 and the other two to work out the conversation between the teacher and the children in picture 3.
4. Ask the two larger groups to present their conversations to each other.
Homework
Copy the phrases and make sentences.

The second period
Revision of Part A.
B1. The children are going to do an experiment. Listen and act.
Presentation
1. Draw a table on the board with three columns. Write a different experiment in each: a little water once a day, a lot of water once a week, a little water once a month.
2. Tell the pupils an experiment is when we change something to see what happens. Tell the pupils to guess what will happen to the three plants.
Practice
1. Show Transparency. Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette. Point to the three tomato plants. Read what the teacher says about the three experiments.
2. Read the conversation and ask the class to read it after me.
3. Point to the drawings on the board of how the plants will be after one month. Ask the pupils to make the appropriate sentences using grow quickly, grow slowly and die.
B2. Now the children are going to do another experiment. Listen, write and act.
Presentation
1. Ask the pupils Can you remember what plants need to grow?
2. Write the three things plants need in a list on the board, i.e. soil, water, light. Rub one off and say, for example, We will give a plant only soil and water. Will it grow? What will happen? Get the pupils to make sentences about each of the three possible combinations and demonstrate by rubbing off the appropriate word.

Practice
1. Show Transparency. Read the conversation and ask the pupils to complete the sentences.
2. Ask the pupils to read the answers aloud for the whole class to check.

The third period
Revision of B1 and B2.
B3. Listen and circle.
1. Ensure that the pupils know that they have to circle either the growing tomato plant or the dying plant for each of the sentences that they will hear, according to what they think will happen. Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette.
2. Ask the pupils to listen to the cassette once more and to check their answers.
C. A TV show.
1. Point to the characters in the picture and read their speech bubbles aloud. Read the description of how a plant grows from the TV sets.
2. Play the cassette for the pupils and ask them to say the sentences after the cassette.
3. Ask the pupils What will happen after a plant grows? What will come to the flower? What will the flower make? What will happen to the seed?
D. Read C again. Number the sentences.
1. Ask the pupils to read the passage again. Show them where to write numbers to show the order of things that happen when a plant grows. Remind them to check back with the passage.
2. Check the answers with the pupils.

The fourth period
Revision

E. Say the sound and the words.
1. Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette and ask the pupils to listen to the sound and the words.
2. Say the words slowly and clearly. Check that the pupils are saying the sound correctly.
3. Point to the pictures and check that the pupils can say the words without my model.
4. Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette again. Ask the pupils to listen to and say the poem.
5. Ask them to listen to the four words at the bottom of the page and to circle the words with the same letters and sound as the key words. Get the pupils to repeat the rhyme.
F. Grow plants in your classroom.
The pupils do the activities as shown in their books.
G. Listen, chant and number.
1. Play the Pupil’s Book Cassette for the pupils to listen to the chant.
2. Play the cassette again and encourage the pupils to join in with the words.
3. Tell the pupils to write the numbers of verses next to the correct pictures.
H. Think about it.
The plant is a cactus. It needs very little water. Twice a month is enough water for it. Ask the pupils if they have this kind of plant at home and ask how often they water it.
