Talking about my lesson “My mini-house”
Background of this lesson:
Under the circumstances of the national curriculum reform, the teacher and the students both change their roles in studying. The teacher is a leader, and the students become the main body of the studying. The main instructional aim of teaching English in primary school is to cultivate pupils’ basic abilities and their good sense of the English Language, and then develop their keen interest in English. It is also necessary for the students in Grade Five to improve their communicative abilities since they have learned English for two years.

Contents:
My lesson is about Unit 5, PEP Primary English, Book 5. The subject of this unit is about room. In the first four periods, the students will learn some words and expressions about the subject. This lesson is the fifth period. It is a colligated lesson. In this lesson, the students will improve their communicative abilities through a series of activities. I think it is good for them to improve their language competence.

Teaching aims:
1. Aims on the knowledge
1). To enable the students master the new words of this unit, and using the sentences pattern of this unit freely: What’s it like? There is a bed in the room. The trash bin is under the table. Etc.
2). To read and understand the email I introduced in the lesson.
3). To finish the task of designing mini-houses in groups.
2. Aims on the abilities
a. Improve the students’ listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.
b. Improve the students’ abilities of communication and their innovation.
3. Aims on the emotion
1). To foster students’ consciousness of good co-operation and proper competition.
2). To improve the students’ imaginative skill and space designing skill.
3). Raise the students’ interest in English.

Key point and difficulty:
The key point of this lesson is to use the words and sentences of both this unit and the learned to communicate with each other freely.
The difficulty of this lesson is to introduce their mini-house fluently and correctly.
Designing thought and teaching approaches:
In order to raise the students’ interest, I design a task in this lesson, that is, to design a mini-house in the QQ homestead. The students can experience pleasure and success in the process of finishing this task. I use many games and activities to stimulate the students’ studying passion. I use the communicative approach in this lesson to improve their communicative ability. At last, I try to enlarge the students’ language input by introducing an email and some other materials. I use the evaluation to ensure the students’ studying effect. In this lesson, a recorder, some pictures, some word cards and CAI will be needed.

Teaching procedures and purposes of my designing:
Step1. Warm-up
Lead the students sing a song together. Talk with the students freely and present the task. Introduce the assessment method.
Purpose: It is important to form a better English learning surrounding and atmosphere for the students by doing some activities. The song is about the bedroom so it can provide situations to review learned knowledge for the next step. The assessment method is introduced here to ensure the students’ studying effect.
Step2. About the words
In this step I will use three games to revise the words of this unit.
Game1: Look at part of the pictures and guess the words.
Game2: Big mouth and pat the flies.
Game3: Listen and touch.
Purpose: Revise the words they learned. Stimulate their learning interest.
Step3. About the sentences
There are three activities in this step.
Firstly, lead the students play a game: Uh-huh and uh-uh.
Secondly, present an email. Ss read the email and find the proper picture.
Thirdly, present two pictures of two rooms. Lead the students observe the pictures carefully and find the differences of these two pictures.
Purpose: Revise the sentences of this unit. Enlarge the language input for the students. Improve their listening, reading and speaking skills. Improve their language competence.
Step 4 Expanse
There are three tasks in this step for the students to finish.
First, I’ll introduce on room that have many mistakes. Lead the students look at it carefully and talk about it.
Then, I’ll lead the students discuss about how to make a beautiful and comfortable room. The students can exchange the opinions with each other and talk freely.
At last, the students will finish the main task of this lesson: to design mini-houses in groups. Work in groups, and then introduce their designing group by group.
Choose out the best designing, give prizes.
Purpose: Task-based approach and communicative approach are used in this lesson to develop the students’ ability of communication, and to raise their interest in English. Finishing the task in groups the students’ ability of co-operation will be well trained. The students’ imaginative skill and observing skill are also trained in this step. Give them proper evaluation in time so that the students can experience the pleasure and success of learning.
Step5. The end of the class
Sing a song.
Introduce the homework.
Purpose: It is necessary for the students to do some extensive exercises after class. For some excellent students, I think it is suitable for them to write short passages.
Thinking about my lesson:
I think there are three bright points in my lesson.
Firstly, I create an interesting situation: playing in the QQ homestead. The task is to design mini-houses in the QQ homestead. The students are interested in playing computer very much; surely they will be interested in this situation. I think they will finish the task happily. They can also experience pleasure and success in the process of finishing the task.
Then, I use many games and activities to stimulate the students learning passion. The games and activities are connecting with the language materials tightly so that the students can improve their language competence while playing. I also introduce a lot of materials to enlarge the students’ language input. It is good for them to form a good sense of English language. CAI is used to improve the efficiency of the lesson.
Thirdly, I apply an assessment method to ensure the students’ learning effect. I divide the students into four groups and hold a competition between them. It is good to foster the students’ consciousness of good co-operation and proper competition. The prizes are kinds of things connecting to the teaching materials so that the students can also practice the language while choosing their prizes.
An American educationist, Jerome S. Bruner said, “The best stimulation of study is the interest about the materials the students learned.” I think, in this lesson, I do a lot to make the materials interesting, and I’m sure the students’ interest will be well improved. And they will feel happy while learning.
