The Tower of London is one of the capital city’s most important and interesting buildings . The central part --- the White Tower (so called because of the color of the stone from which it is made ) was built by William the Conqueror in the 11th century . It was the strongest fortress in England :a 35-metre-tall tower , with walls 5 meters thick in places , a ditch and a new wall around it , then the old Roman walls and the river . It served as his power center and a prison .

In 1240 Henry III made it his home , add new buildings , including the Lion Tower where the Royal Zoo was housed until 1834 .

Several kings of England died there . In 1485 Henry VII moved there with his bodyguards- the Yeoman of the Guard , who still guard the Tower in the same uniforms .
