Teaching and Learning Plan for The written word
Reading Appreciating Literature
1. The Analysis of the Teaching Material
Section 1: Position: Reading (1) in Unit 1 of Module 8
Importance: show basic information of classic literature; introduce and explain ways to read a pervasive essay
Acquirements: Have Ss do some listening, speaking and exercises to understand difficult sentences and comprehend the passage better.
Section 2: Teaching Objectives
2.1 Knowledge Aims
a. Have Ss learn and master the words and expressions in the text.
b. Have Ss acquire knowledge about classic literature.
2.2 Ability Aims
a. Improve students’ reading ability (skimming and detailed reading).
b. Help Ss express their opinions about classics and film adaptations of classic novels.
2.3 Emotional Aims
a. Arouse Students’ interests in classic literature and their cross-cultural awareness.
b. Develop Students’ ability of co-operation through group discussion.
Section 3: Teaching Key Points and Teaching Difficulties
a. Learn and master reading skills.
b. Train students’ speaking ability.
2. Teaching Methods
a. Skimming reading to grasp a general idea of the text.
b. Detailed reading to get the detailed information.
c. Asking-and-answering questions to help Ss understand the text exactly.
d. Group work to make every student attend the class.
3. Learning method
a. Ss have known something about classic literature by obtaining information from the computer.
b. Ss don’t often use English to express themselves and communicate with others, so try to encourage them to cooperate with others.
c. Some students are not active in the class because they are afraid of making mistakes and therefore I will create an easy atmosphere.
4. Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in (5 mins)
Show Ss part of the film adaptations of Great Expectations, and then ask Ss some questions as follow:
What is the story of Great Expectations about?
Have you ever seen one of the film adaptations of Great Expectations? Did you like it? Why or why not?
Do you like film adaptations of classic novels? Why or why not?
(设计说明：本课主题为较抽象的经典文学，以模像直观的形式引入课堂，可激发学生对文学作品的兴趣，激活学生思维，调动学生头脑中已有知识背景，引导学生尽快进入学习状态。)
Step 2 Pre-reading (4 mins)
Present some difficult words on the screen, and give some simple explanation.

Step 3 While-reading(15 mins)
1. Skimming
Ask Ss to skim the essay and try to answer the three questions in Part A. Remind the Ss to underline the key words and phrases...
(设计说明：引导学生通过浏览标题和副标题，划出重点句和关键词的方式，让学生快速把握文章的中心意思，既有利于下一步语言教学活动，又可以培养学生快速阅读的能力，突破教学难点。)
2. Detailed Reading
Have Ss listen to the text and read after it with tasks in Part C1.
(设计说明：让学生完成课文的精听与精读，可促进学生听与读的技能培养，并通过任务布置，提高学生自主完成目标任务的能力，积极响应新课标要求。)
Step 4 Post-reading (18 mins)
1. Discussion (10 mins)
a. Organize Ss into groups of four and ask them to discuss the five main elements (characters, setting, symbols, theme, and plot) of the novel Great Expectations.
b. Have Ss think of some possible endings for the novel and report their answers in the class.
(设计说明：两组讨论中第一组设置了有结构问题，进一步培养学生阅读及总结能力，第二组设置了无结构问题，可激发学生的发散思维能力；同时，通过分组讨论的形式可提高学生英语表达能力，团队协作的能力，有助于进一步提高学生对英国文学的鉴赏能力。)
2. Consolidation (8 mins)
Ask Ss to finish tasks in Part E individually，and check the answers as a class.
(设计说明：通过连线和选词填空的练习方式巩固重点词汇和语篇感知能力，引导学生将所学内容进行输出和反馈。)
Step 5 Homework (3mins)
a. Read the text again and try to retell the story of Great Expectations.
b. Think of some possible endings for the novel and write it down.
5. Blackboard Design
The blackboard will be two parts. The left is some questions and the right is main elements of the novel Great Expectations.
